Homemade shirt slippers are really easy to make. They're also unique, and a little goofy looking :)
These are the materials you'll need:
The Steps:
Fold the sleeves over the body of the shirt.

Easy enough? Ok, now fold down the bottom half over the top half.

Now take your foot and put it right in the middle of the shirt.

Now comes the tricky part. You'll have to use your best judgment here, because every shirt likes to fold itself in a different way. Try and make one half of the shirt fold over your foot. You don't want the cloth too high up on your ankle, but you also don't want the bottom flaring out too much. Try and make it look something like this:

Now do the same thing to the other side.

Now carefully take your foot out of the shirt, and let it sit there. This is going to be the basic shape of your slipper.
It's time to sow the front and sides. When I thread my needle, I put the thread through the eye, make a double knot, and then leave a little extra string hanging off. This is so the knot doesn't untie.

Fold the cloth on the front, and sew the front of the slipper. I don't worry about reinforcement right now - just get it sewn so that it stays together. You can come back later and make the slipper durable.

Sew the loose sides of the slipper.

The top part of the slipper is all ragged. Fold the top so that it looks even and symmetrical, then sew it in three or four spots to hold it in place.

Now it's time to fix the back of the slipper. Pinch and sew both sides, so that the foot hole is just the right size. Keep in mind you want a little bit of the cloth pulled up in the back, so there's something to hold to the back of the foot.

You should now have a slipper that looks something like this.

If you look on the inside you'll see there's a loose piece of cloth. When you stick your foot in, it will get in the way, so take your needle and sew it in place.

The only thing left to do is reinforce any other weak points of the shirt slipper. After that, all you'll need to do is make another slipper to match.... Or not match... :)

If you have made a pair of shirt slippers, I would love to see how you did it. Shirt Slipper making is a new art form, and there is definitely a lot of room for improvement. If you would like to share your design or technique, you can email me at:
